4. The Free Sony Repair

Yes. You heard right. It's free!
- 4.1 Why are they doing it? -
Some would like to believe that Sony is repairing DRE infected systems for
free just because they're such a great company and want to do it out of the
kindness of their heart. Not true. Sony got slapped with a class-action
lawsuit due to the frequent nature of these Disc Read Error breakdowns. So
it was either pay a heap of money or repair systems for free. I'm sure you
can figure out which one they chose.
- 4.2 What do I need to get the free repair? -
Surprisingly little. All you need is a PlayStation2 that's getting Disc Read
Errors on games. Seriously, that's all you need. Nothing else.
- 4.3 Is there anything that will disqualify me? -
Yes. If you installed a mod-chip you can just forget about getting this
repair. Sony will not touch systems that have or had mod-chips in them.
Another thing that will get you disqualified is if the DREs are a direct
result of your own actions. That could mean if you've dropped it, spilled
something on it, etc. They will also not repair it if you damaged the system
further as a result of trying to repair it yourself. And that is a real
danger. As I write this, I have received three separate emails from people in
just the past two days who tried to fix it themselves and now have a broken
system on their hands. I very much advise against it. |

yup yup i found out about this a while ago, called em, sent it in, 2 weeks later i got a referbished one in the mail. . .with a free controller wooty woot. 
they even took it after i messed around with the inside tryin to fix it myself |

Sony didn't have much of a choice. But I still like them.  |
