to buy or not to buy..... FFXI confusion...

ok im startn to get worried...i wanna get it realy bad and im gettin it for the ps2 so im gunna be spendin an ass load off money for everything. and im worried cause most of the comments ive seen you ppl post are about givving up your accounts cause u never play and stuff like that... so is it realy that bad or was it just not your thing...and if its not too much troubhle plz post some good and bad things about it ..thx

I'll tell ya the game is beautiful and it's great but you don't have any REAL fun till later in the game when you can actually do that exploring stuff. Me I have little or no patience for people or games..If I can't have fun after having the game on for 5 minutes I get annoyed. So any game where I haveta wait for others to be friends with me loses my interest.

I miss Ultima Online and spending 4 hours at a time mining..Now THAT was menotonous but fun as all hell.

Meh I love the game still. Im working on lvling all my jobs. Im playing with awesome people. Im in a great linkshellw here someone is always willing to help or PT with you, or have answers to any questions you could have. You definitely need to have patience with this game but what game doesnt require this?

Basically it boils down to three things:

1) Can you play often?
2) Do you enjoy MMORPGs?
3) Are you willing to be social online?

If you get the game, you need to understand that it takes time to get anywhere. Can't expect to sign on and start kicking ass and unfolding the storyline. There's a great deal of character building before you get to enjoy the amazingly involved story. This, ofcourse, is done because it's aimed to have people spend a good ammount of time playing the game over a long period of time, mastering everything and experiencing what the game has to offer, since most of their money is made off subscriptions and all. If you're playing to just have another great FF experience, great, just know that it's not a weekend thing.

My last point is equally important, because a lot of people go into the game thinking hey I'll just hang out with my friends and it'll be great and we'll do everything together. If you start at the same time, and play only with eachother, then it's possible but most likely what's gonna happen is you'll need to be social, friendly, and flexable with other people online, which isn't a common mindset for most people. Usually the other people there are to compete against, to worry about in PvP, or to "pwn." Since FFXI is based on a group party effort, it's good to be a social person, know people, and build a pool of friends that can help you out and you can help them. FFXI is built so if it's just about yourself, then you won't get very far.

It was great, I loved it, then I'd end up losing sleep over it, which affected my work performance. Basically I began to suffer, both professionally and socially because of it. You really can get sucked in, and I had to make a choice. Because you can't really expect to be a social player unless your willing to make friends then eat their dust because you haven't played for 2 days and in that time frame they've gained 12 lvls. That's probably my main reason for leaving, I had to limit my time and had to make brand new friends whenever I logged on.

I got my free commercial version in the mail today along with the HDD (sony gave it to me as reward for beta testing the PS2 version)
Im debating whether or not to start playing it.

that really ticks me off that they do that for PS2 people but I beta tested the PC version, why didnt I too get a free copy? or at least get to transfer over my character. What a pile o poo Evil or Very Mad

I bought it yesterday for PS2. Besides the amount of money it can take to modify your system, I was very pleased with the expereince. PlayOnline takes a long time to set up too, but for me it was all worth it to join Vana'diel. Be sure to get a USB key board as part of your set up, or you just may as well be a mute.
