Quote: | i gotta agree with Demonic on this one. fanservice is great in theory, i have nothing against using a little sex appeal to sell games here and there.
what i object to is fanservice that turns lovable female characters into slutty-looking bimbos - character that were lovable because of their personalities in FFX, not for their cleavage (although they did go a bit overboard with Lulu's cleavage)!
what sort of message do these character designs send? i imagine an advertising slogan running under these pictures: "well, if you liked Yuna for her adorable shyness, or her quiet leadership, or her determined bravery in the face of impending death...just wait until you see her in a halter-top!"
the message is clearly, "We like good girls, brave girls, ass-kicking girls, initiative-taking girls, basically girls with personality, we like them and all; but all we really care about is seeing them in skimpy clothes!"
or, to put it in an even more demeaning fashion, "Who cares about her personality? Show some leg, baby!"
...
This. Is. Disgusting. And. Despicable.
...
i would not blame Square at all for creating 3 all-new female characters, dressing THEM in bikinis, and putting THEM into a new game, even if it was set in the FFX world. as i said, fanservice is fine by me. but when they create a character solely for the purposes of exploitaion, like Lara Croft, i don't have a problem when they exploit her (it's a separate issue whether they should be creating such characters in the first place). when they take characters that have actually garnered players' respect and affection through their personalities and character traits, reducing them to sex objects is just about the most sickening thing Square could possibly do.
now i love Square, and i seem to say things like this about their upcoming games as often as i say "wow that game looks incredibly good." i continue to love Square because when i think a game looks incredibly good, it turns out to BE incredibly good. but every time i've said to myself, "they should not be making this game, it will be horrendous," i have been right on the money.
so, yay for cleavage and whatnot, but there is no way in HELL that i am buying this piece of trash.

ps - i actually have a theory that FFX-2 is nothing more than a practical joke from some bored Square employees. like, the art department had nothing to do until R&D finishes plans for FFXII, so they're wasting time rendering scantily-clad pics of FFX characters. then someone says, "hey, what if we released these over the internet and claimed it was a sequel to FFX? oh man, that would be hilarious!" and every time they see a forum thread like this one, where people are actually treating it like it's going to be a real game, they all roll around on the floor of their offices laughing like hyenas. i would too if it turned out i was right.
pps - lord, i hope i'm right... |
That's what I'm talking about. Square is just pushing it now...
"Let's put Rikku in a skimpier outfit... with a thong sticking out! We sell so many games like this!"
"Oh yeah, and Yuna can wear bootyshorts!"
"Let's do it!"
"Yeah!"
My reply: No. Don't, you sick, twisted bastards. I will personally hunt down the CEO of Square and KILL him if they make this game. |
